Sanaá - Jebel Haraz – Red Sea – Taiz – Ibb – Sanaá


day 1: arrival at Sanaá airport. Transfer to the hotel located in the old town, close to the souk.

 

Sana`a lies in the heart of Yemeni highlands on a plateau at an altitude of 2.300 metres (= 7.500 ft), surrounded by several mountains notably Jebel Nuqum and Jebel Aiban.The old fortified city contains a wealth of intact architectural gems. It was declared World Heritage City by the UNESCO in 1986. One of the most popular attractions is the Suq al-Milh (salt market) where it is possible to buy not only salt but also bread, spices, raisins, cotton, copper, pottery, silverware, antiques and many other goods.

 

day 2: visit of the old town in the morning, afternoon: Sanaá – Manakha (2.200m), the capital and centre of the HARAZ region (2.5 hour-drive). Hotel with traditional dance and music.

 

Manakha, Al-Hajjara and Al-Hoteib, all found in the Jebel Haraz region of Yemen. This is an area of fortress villages and terraced hillsides planted with coffee, millet and Qat. Traditionally home to the Ismailis who built their defensive towns in the high mountains, Manakha is the principal town of the region. Manakha is another town with steep, narrow streets, stone forts and fortified stone houses.

 

day 3: 6 hour-trek in Jebel Haraz with breathtaking views and little villages all along the way. Manakha  - Assharga (2.100m) - Djerma (2.250m) - Saoud (2.500m). Camping.

 

day 4: 7 hour-trek (Jebel Haraz) from Saoud - Beni Mora (2.550m) - Al Hoteib (2.400m) - Al Kahel (2.700m) - Al Jebel (2.850m) – Nawit (2.450m) - Al Iyana (2.600m). Camping

 

day 5: 6 hour-trek (Jebel Haraz) from Al Iyana – Mazzana (2.600m) - Al Madarah (2.100m)- Jebel Shogrof (2.200m) - Al Sansal (2.400m) - Al Jedawa (2.200m). Camping

 

day 6: 6 hour-trek (Jebel Haraz) from Al Jedawa - Al Haifa (2.000m) - Al Mazab (2.100m) - Bait Al Amir (2.200m) - Al Hajjara (2.300m). By car to Manakha. Hotel

 

day 7: Manakha – Bait Al Faqui. Bait Al Faqui has the biggest market in Yemen which takes place every Friday and the city is renowned for its manual cotton-weaving. We continue to Zabid (85m), one of the oldest university towns in the world and preserved as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. We arrive in Al Khawkha (Red Sea) (4 hour-drive). Hotel

 

day 8: 3 hour-drive from Al Khawkha (65m) – Jufrus (1.265m) – Taiz. Hotel

 

day 9: Taiz (1.400m) – Jebel Saber (3.006m), from where we have a wonderful view over the city of Taiz – Al Hodein – Jiblah (2.300m) – Ibb ( 3 hour-drive). Hotel

 

Taiz is a city in the Yemen Highlands near the famous Mocha port on the Red Sea. It is situated at an altitude of 1.400 metres and has a dramatic setting where the roads run up and down the mountain sides. Mountain Saber (3.006m) rises above the city which has many old and beautiful quarters, with houses that are typically built with brown bricks and usually white mosques. There is the old citadel and the governor's palace on top of a mountain above the city centre. Taiz has many road connections with the rest of the country. The city is served by the Taiz International Airport. Coffee, grown in the surrounding landscape together with vegetables and the mild narcotic qat, is the economic base. Among the city's own industries are cotton-weaving, tanning and production of jewellery. Taiz cheese is also renowned throughout Yemen. The city has a madrasa that has status as a university

 

day 10: Ibb (1.920m) – Sanaá (2.5 hour-drive). Transfer to the airport. Departure
